Translators 'Need Standards'
In their remarks at a forum celebrating the China Translation and Publishing Corporation's (CTPC) 35th anniversary, China's top translators called on the government to increase its oversight of the translation industry. Among those who spoke of the need for increased government regulation was CTPC Deputy Manager Jia Yanli, who noted that
the standards for entering the translation industry were too low. Those low standards have resulted in a proliferation of small firms that do not have qualified staff but attract clients with their low prices
, said Liu Heping, a professor at the Beijing Language and Culture University and a CTPC advisor.
The increased competition has in turn degraded the quality of translation, Heping noted
. Others were more optimistic. Huang Youyi of the China International Publishing Group agreed that there needs to be more regulation but then added that the state-authorized National Accreditation Test for Translators and Interpreters (NAETI) will eventually get clients to choose companies that have qualified translators.
